This will be my 1st & only child at 44

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Sunday, November 27, 2011 | 2 comments

Hi - is there anyone out there who's pregnant and alone in their 40s? I'm 44 and have just found out I'm pregnant. This will be my first (and only) child.

The father wants me to terminate and it looks like I'm going to be doing this alone. I've never really thought of myself as being "middle aged" before because I don't feel that way.

And neither have I worried too much about what other people think, but all of a sudden I'm terrified of walking my little baby and people commenting on my grandchild!

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.

I'm not sure how old your post is but I hope you have or have had the baby. I was pregnant with my first and only child at 41 yrs of age. I have never regretted a moment with him. Not one. He is the love of my life and teaches me so much about myself. Sure, age is on my mind when I wonder what he will think about his 'older mum' but the more I look around, the more I see older mums. It's just sometimes they have a few more kids than me. I know my boy loves me and he knows I love him and that's more than some kids get from so called normal families.

I'm 44 and My partner and I are in constant discussion of having a child. I wander often, why I feel like I'm missing out on something because we do not have a child. We are looking into IVF. It is very expensive to have a child with this procedure. I'm so afraid that I'm making a huge bet. I wish I could be in your shoes and not have to spend the money. I keep thinking to myself what makes a women want to have child at this age? My heart tells me this is what I'm supposed to do. I'm very envious of you all that get to experience the joys of natural conception. Wish me the best in our venture. How does it feel to be a mother at 44? What plans have you made for the future or will you simply take it as it comes?
