My midwives were very nonchalant about it. They serve clients from 17-48... and 48 just happens to be the oldest mama they've had as a client, not necessarily a limit for them.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.

I delivered my last child at the age of 48 at a birthing center in Texas. It was the best decision I could have made - doctors I saw early in the pregnancy were influenced by my age and counseled early intervention for the birth despite my good health. I had a natural water birth at the birthing center with the back-up of a fully qualified 'certified nurse midwife' and her staff. If there had been complications a local Ob/Gyn would have acted as her back-up giving access to the local hospital two miles away. A fantastic experience.
I will be 48 this month and am 15 weeks pregnant with the cutest little baby ever (we've had a million ultrasounds with IVF). It's been a rough pregnancy as far as fatigue and morning sickness but I and he are very healthy. My husband is 51. We are also thinking about having a second child next year.
These days, you CAN have a baby at almost any age. You may have to use IVF, or donor egg, or adopt, but if you are really wanting a child, don't let age deter you. More and more of us are waiting later and later in life.
I think it is great that you had your little one at a birthing center. For me, there is zero indication of anything about this birth being high risk, and I'm glad to hear that your birthing center allowed you the healthiest and most natural birth and did not automatically label you high risk because of your age.

I have a 7 month old and Im 53! Used donor eggs, of course, with an overseas clinic, and had normal full term delivery at an NHS hospital. I declined the consultant's kind offer of a C section due to my age. Had no problems in pregnancy - so age alone is no reason not to have a baby.
