Having children after age 45 higher in 1960

The percentage of women having children after age 45 was higher in 1960 than it is now, because more women then continued to have children until they hit menopause.
Lacking convenient, reliable contraceptives, they lacked today's choices about when to have children. The birth control pill became widely available in the early 1960's.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.

Hi, not sure where this should go. My last period was June 21 and since then I've been feeling mildly nauseous, non premenstrual and, most revealling, completely disinterested in drinking coffee. I LOVE coffee! Yesterday my husband brought home a pregnancy test and it scored 2 lines. I am dumbfounded. We had our first child when I was nearly 43 and did try for another, including some unsuccessful IUI's at a supposedly prestigious clinic outside of Boston. They basically gave us the donor-egg-or-nothing talk when I was 44+. So I've been slowly deaccessioning the mat. clothes, the unused baby stuff, etc.
I am 5 wks and 1 day and have a collage of feelings about this. I dread the medical comments we'll probably get when we go in for preliminary visit. I haven't had a gyn. visit since, um age 44? I'll be 48 in October. (Hey, I've been busy, life w/a small child is involving). Anyway, asking for prayers, encouragement, acceptance, etc. I am a for-real 47 year old with a double-positive preg. stick in the bathroom right now, Sunday, August 10, 2008. -- Aiolia
For Aiolia - have just come across this site as having turned 40 and not being married or with children, I am clinging to the hope that it still might happen to me one day. Not sure what your situation is now after these months, but my prayers go out to you and I wish you every best.
