Unplanned baby in late 40s, early 50s
A woman's fertility falls after the age of 35, but many an older woman has been surprised when she has fallen pregnant with an unplanned baby in her late 40s or even early 50s.
Cherie Blair, the Prime Minister's wife, was certainly not alone in assuming her fertility was negligible only to be surprised and delighted to be proved wrong.
The Prime Minister's wife gave birth to her fourth child two years ago, at the age of 45. Their first child, Euan, was born in 1984.
Sadly, Cherie suffered a miscarriage following another unplanned pregnancy at the age of 47.
Late pregnancy can and does happen, and for this reason, it is important to get correct advice about contraception even beyond the menopause.
