My grandmother gave birth at 47

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Tuesday, February 19, 2008 | 0 comments

My grandmother gave birth to my mother at the age of 47, and my mother always spoke of her in the warmest possible terms.

By that time there was only one other child at home, who joined the army a few years later, and my mother thoroughly enjoyed being the only pebble on the beach!

The family were poor, as it was at the end of the First World War, and not many people had spare cash to throw around, but my mother regarded her childhood as a happy and emotionally secure one, and was able to pass this feeling on to me.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
